Taking his career in wrestling more seriously, only at the age of 18, Marquardt began his training under the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructor Ricardo Murgel. Inspite being an active sport athlete during his school days, he claims, he never became involved in martial arts until he saw the footage of the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Listing out one of the most successful trainers with Nathan has trained with, includes a list of people like Sanae Kikuta, and GRABAKA Dojo in Japan. Although he is well recognized for his association with the mixed martial arts team Greg Jackson’s “Gaidojutsu” and has also trained with American mixed martial artist and kick boxer Duane “Bang Ludwig” in Colorado.

Nathan started with his professional mixed martial art career in 1999, before he entered the Bas Rutten Invitational 4 tournament; he had some huge victories in different promotions, which was structured in such a manner that the winner will be offered a contract with the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Although Nathan won the tournament and stood victorious, he was offered no such contract. Instead he shook his hands with the Japan’s Pancrase organization, which do foster such fighters naming few such as Bas Rutten and Ken Shamrock.

Marquardt lost his first Pancrase fight against Genki Sudo via submission but was invited back for a middleweight elimination tournament. Mentioning few victories, this exceptional fighter have deafeted one of the most successful athletes in this field like Shonie Carter, Daiju Takase and Kiuma Kunioko and within no time he became the first Middleweight King of Pancrase.

Leaving everyone behind, Nathan has an outstanding mixed martial arts record with 25 wins, 4 by knockouts, 14 by submissions, 7 losses and 2 draws. Few of his victories includes UFC Ultimate Fight Night against Ivan Salaverry by Decision (unanimous), Pancrase: Spiral 4 against Izuru Takeuchi By Technical Submission (rear neck choke), IFC: Global Domination against Steve Gomm by submission, Pancrase: Spirit 3 against Kazuo Misaki by Technical Knock out (arm injury) and Bas Rutten Invitational 4 against Josh Groves by Submission (triangle choke).

Defending his title twice, Nathan was defeated by Kunioku by December 2001, but also recaptured the championship in December 2002 by defeating Kunioku again and this time holding the title for almost a year.
